SUMMMER READING CAMP (SRC) provides activities to help Hmong children, kindergarten through 6th grade, improve reading skills between school terms. Volunteer tutors and mentors—high school and college students—work with the children for ten weeks on a variety of academic activities, including reading, comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, writing, book reports, journal entries, spelling tests, and math. Pre- and post-tests are used to measure changes in reading skills from the beginning of SRC to the end. SRC participants will participate in art, Hmong history, and sports activities.
The SRC goals are for the volunteer tutors and mentors to
-
Read with each child daily.
-
Help children improve their reading comprehensions, vocabulary, phonics, writing, and math skills.
- Provide other academic activities individually and in small groups.
- Teach basic computer skills.
-
Tell stories and provide field trips, art projects, and other fun activities.
Program Activities:
During fiscal year 2007-08 (July 1-June 30), 50 children, six volunteer tutors and 10 older youth volunteers participated in SRC. Two-thirds of the children increased their reading level from the beginning to the end of the camp. In addition, they enjoyed learning about Hmong history and culture and participating in a camping trip and sports tournament, going swimming, and drawing and other art activities.
